Text from accompanying artist book:

Fossil: 1610s, “obtained by digging” (adj.), from Fr. fossile, from L. fossilis “dug up,” from fossus, pp. of fodere “to dig,” from PIE base bhedh- “to dig, pierce.”
When I was about a year old, my parents arranged for my hand to be cast in plaster.
The result is a gesture regarded as obscene in some cultures, and as a wish for fertility & good luck in others.
